The University of Ghana Students Representative Council (UGSRC) Vetting Committee has announced that Maradona Adjei Yeboah, known as Guru, and Lawrence Edinam Egleh will not be allowed to participate in the upcoming 2024 UGSRC elections.
The decision was based on their failure to meet the residency requirements set forth in the UGSRC constitution.
The Vetting Committee’s statement, released on August 16, highlighted that both candidates did not adhere to the residency criteria stipulated in Article 30(1)(a) of the UGSRC constitution.
This article requires that candidates meet specific residency qualifications, which are essential for eligibility for executive positions within the council.
The statement read, “After a comprehensive assessment, it was concluded that Maradona Adjei Yeboah and Lawrence Edinam Egleh do not fulfill the eligibility criteria required for UGSRC executive roles.”
The disqualification has drawn attention from the student body, sparking debates about the fairness and impact of the residency requirements on the electoral process.
This move underscores the UGSRC’s commitment to enforcing its constitutional guidelines and ensuring that all candidates meet the necessary qualifications for participation in student governance.
