Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to reduce data costs and provide free Wi-Fi in educational institutions across Ghana if his party wins the 2024 general elections.
Mahama made these announcements during the launch of the NDC’s Youth Manifesto at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on August 12, 2024.
Mahama emphasized the NDC’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve education, highlighting the importance of internet accessibility for students and educators. “We will ensure that every school in Ghana has free Wi-Fi and work with telecom companies to bring down the cost of data for all Ghanaians,” he stated.
The NDC plans to utilize fibre optic and satellite internet technologies to extend free Wi-Fi services to schools and other selected public places. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the digital landscape in the country and ensure that all students have access to online resources, regardless of their location.
In addition to improving internet access, Mahama also unveiled the ‘No Fees Stress’ initiative, aimed at providing financial support to tertiary students through the Students Loan Trust Fund. This initiative will help eligible students cover their fees without the burden of upfront payments, making higher education more accessible.
Furthermore, Mahama reiterated the NDC’s commitment to expanding educational infrastructure. The party plans to build more facilities in existing secondary schools and complete the E-block projects initiated during his previous administration.
Mahama’s promises come as part of the NDC’s broader plan to enhance the quality of education and make learning more accessible to all Ghanaians. As the 2024 elections approach, these pledges are expected to be key points in the NDC’s campaign.
