Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged African leaders and governments to focus on empowering their citizens as a cornerstone of strengthening democracy across the continent.
Speaking at the Democratic Union of Africa (DUA) Annual Forum held in Accra, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for policies that prioritize education, quality healthcare, and the promotion of free enterprise and individual freedoms.
In his address, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the intrinsic link between democracy, the rule of law, and economic development, noting that a democratic environment fosters innovation and economic growth. He argued that protecting individual freedoms and promoting the rule of law are essential for creating a society where economic activities can thrive.
“Africa’s progress hinges on our ability to empower our citizens through education and healthcare, and by encouraging free enterprise and individual liberties,” Dr. Bawumia stated. He further called for the adoption of digitalization initiatives to enhance governance transparency and efficiency, which he believes are crucial for sustainable development.

The Vice President also underscored the importance of closer cooperation among African nations, urging leaders to work together to ensure that democracy becomes a defining feature of the continent. He expressed optimism that, with collective effort, Africa can create a future where democratic principles are deeply rooted and widely practiced.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his belief that empowered citizens are the backbone of a thriving democracy and called on African governments to take decisive action in this regard. “Together, we can build a continent where democracy is not just a concept but a reality that drives our development,” he affirmed.
